Falling Leaves
Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
Chorus:
All join hands and circle round,
While we watch the leaves fall down.
See them swirling to the ground,
Whirling, twirling all around.
See them skipping here and there,
Dipping, flipping in the air.
(Chorus)
Autumn leaves so peacefully,
Falling, falling from the tree.
(Chorus)
Leaves, Leaves Falling Down
Tune: Row, Row Your Boat
Leaves, leaves falling down,
Falling to the ground.
Red and yellow,
Orange and brown,
The leaves are falling down.
Leaves Are Falling
Tune: Jingle Bells
Leaves are falling,
Leaves are falling,
One fell on my nose.
Leaves are falling,
Leaves are falling,
One fell on my toes.
Leaves are falling,
Leaves are falling,
One fell on my head.
Leaves are falling,
Leaves are falling,
Yellow, orange and red.
Fall is Here
Tune: The Farmer in the Dell
The leaves are falling down,
The leaves are falling down,
Red and brown they flutter down,
The leaves are falling down.
The squirrels hide their nuts,
The squirrels hide their nuts,
They hide them away for a winter's day,
The squirrels hide their nuts.
The children go to school,
The children go to school,
They learn and play throughout the day,
The children go to school.

Silly Sally Squirrel
Tune: Alouette
Silly Sally Squirrel,
Sitting in the sun,
Singing lots of Ss until the day is done,
She sings about soup, sun and sky,
Can you think of more? Let's try....
Five Little Leaves
Five little leaves up in the tree,
They're as bright as can be,
Along came the wind,
And blew them all around,
And one little leaf fell to the ground.
Little Leaves
Little leaves fall gently down,
Red, yellow, orange and brown.
Swirling, twirling to the ground,
Down and down and down and down.
Taking a Walk
Taking a walk is so much fun!
We don't hurry,
We don't run.
We watch for birds,
We watch for bees,
We watch for all the falling leaves.
Make a set of 26 large and 26 small leaves, write upper case letters on large leaves and lower case letters on small leaves, laminate. Have students match them up.
All About Leaves
Make books for students to read and illustrate.
Title: All About Leaves by _________________
Page 2: Here is a leaf that is as green as can be,
Page 3: Here are two leaves changing colors you see.
Page 4: Three leaves are big,
Page 5: Four leaves are small,
Page 6: And five leaves that show the colors of fall.
In the Fall
Type the sentence "I like to see ____________________
in the fall." on 8 1/2 by
11" paper. Have students fill in the blank and illustrate.
L Sounds
Make a large tree trunk, place on construction paper.
Cut out leaves and place pictures of l objects on them along with a few
others on the leaves. Have students place only leaves with l sounds on
the tree trunk.
Leaf Rubbings
Have students make a leaf rubbing, then fill in the following
sentence frame:
Child's name's leaf is ___________ and _____________.
Feed Silly Sally Squirrel
Place the picture of a squirrel on the front of a lunch
sack and cut a slit in the mouth through the sack. Have students place
cards beginning with the "S" sound in the squirrel's mouth and place other
cards in a pile.
Math Leaf Seriation
Cut out leaves of assorted sizes from
construction paper. Have students place them in order from smallest to
largest.
Feed the Squirrels
Cut out 10 large squirrels; place
nos. 1-10 on them. Place in a center with unshelled nuts and have students
place the correct number of nuts on each squirrel.
Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf Game
After reading the book Red Leaf,
Yellow Leaf, make a large bare tree on poster board and laminate it.
Laminate red and yellow construction paper, cut 20 yellow and 20 red oak
leaves using the Ellison die cut. Place the leaves on the tree. The children
(2 can play or you can have a team of 2 each) are given a die (I make a
die with 1,2,3 and a couple of blanks on one inch cubes) and a small basket.
(I found baskets at the Dollar Store that resembled small bushel baskets.)
The children take turns rolling the die and the first team to gather their
color of leaf wins.
Fall Patterns
There's a company called
Sweet Creations that makes miniature cookie cutters in leaf shapes. Make
salt dough in several fall colors to be used for counting, sorting, patterning,
etc.
Use fall cut outs (scarecrow, pumpkin, leaves, corn shock) to make patterns. Glue on sentence strips.
Use unshelled nuts to make patterns, glue on card stock.
Autumn Tree
Cut out bare trees in brown construction
paper and tiny leaves in fall colors using the Ellison die cut. Make task
cards and have students place correct number of leaves on tree. For example:
3 yellow leaves
5 orange leaves
2 brown leaves
Leaf Concentration
Put leaf pairs on 4x6" cards, laminate.
Use them to play concentration.
Leaf Graph
Place a small number of leaves (small
leaves cut with the Ellison die cut) of different colors in a bag. Have
students sort and graph the leaves.
Sorting Leaves By Color
Make baskets and put
the color words green, yellow, orange and red on them. Make and assortment
of leaves in different colors for students to sort.
Fall Collection
Place a collection of seeds, leaves,
nuts and pine cones in the Science Center. Place leaf shaped paper, magnifying
glasses and pencils in center. Encourage students to examine items and
record their observations.
Nature Walk
Take a nature walk and
collect seeds, leaves and other items related to fall.
Arrange leaves on a sheet of construction paper. Fill a spray bottle with diluted tempera paint in fall colors. Spray lightly over leaves. When the paint dries, lift the leaves to reveal the design.
Make a dancing leaf by using a large construction paper leaf, fan folded strips for arms and legs, use smaller leaves for hands and feet. Draw a face on the leaf.
Use compressed sponge and cut tiny leaves. Hot glue on film canister lids to make sponge stamps. Have students draw a tree trunk and sponge paint leaves on the tree. This idea also works with large sponge leaves and a large tree.
Make leaf rubbings using different types of leaves.
Make a large tree trunk and have students trace their hands in fall colors. Use the hands as fall leaves on the tree.
Make large leaf shapes on white copy paper. Cut yellow, red, orange and green tissue paper in one inch squares. Mix glue and water, half and half. paint small portion of each leaf with glue mixture. Place different colored squares on the leaf. Continue until the leaf is covered. Cut out and place near a window to let the sun shine through.
