Guided Reading
Guided
Reading is an important part of our day. During Literacy Center time I
work with small groups of students. Each child ahs their own copy of the
book we will be reading that week. The guided reading books have very simple
texts that are repetitive, rhythmical and rhyming. Each week the guided
reading book will focus on sight words that your child needs to learn to
recognize.
Our
guided reading books will almost always go along with the theme we are
working on.
Some
of the guided reading activities will include:
Highlighting
sight words and other activities with sight words
Tracking
print (your child will be bringing home a little pointer to read with)
Working
with beginning sounds
Working
with picture clues
Punctuation
Matching
print/words in sentences
Your child will be bringing home their guided reading books each week. In some cases the story will be mwmorized. memorization actually helps children to begin to read independently. When they "hear" the story in their heads they automatically correct their mistakes. DO NOT, HOWEVER, EXPECT YOUR CHILD TO KNOW EVERY WORD.
Homework activities will be
assigned to go with the little book sent home each week. Encourage your
child to read these books often. Your child's attitude toward reading can
affect future reading success, so make it FUN!! Last year, many parents
let their children decorate a shoe box to keep their little books in.
