Language Arts
Have students describe their teddy bears, write down each response and make a class book. You might also use the following pattern sentence. My teddy bear is ________ and ________.
Compare bear parts to human body parts - talk about likenesses and differences.
Read Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? to students, use the pattern of the book to make a class big book.
Send a teddy bear home each week. Have the children and parents keep a journal of what they and the teddy bear did all weekend.
Read Ira Sleeps Over by Bernard Waber. Have students brainstorm a list of their favorite sleeping items.
Compare two teddy bears: likenesses and differences.
Letter B: Cut out a brown bear and glue him/her on blue paper, then add a band aid, buttons, black beans (for eyes) and a bow or a bandana on its head or around its neck. Then your class can write a class book of how their bear got hurt (the reason for the band aid for their Boo Boo!)
Read This is the Boy and the Picnic Lunch. After reading, have the studenst brainstorm things they would take on a picnic. Play an oral language game, "I'm Going on A Picnic." Begin by having the first child (or yourself) what they would like to take on a picnic. The second child must say what they first child said and add an item. At the first of the year you might break the large group into groups of five.
Read Corduroy and A Pocket for Corduroy. Provide a template of a bear, overalls and a pocket along with different colors of constrution paper and buttons. Have students trace their pieces and glue together. Add buttons on the overalls. Have students tell what they would put in their pocket if they were Corduroy.
Read Where's My Teddy?. After sharing the story, write each child's teddy bear's name or on chart paper. Brainstorm rhyming words for each bear's name (can be a made up word). Encourage students to make up a rhyme for the rhyming pair and illustrate. Make a class book.
Read a version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, provide props and have students dramatize the story. Place in dramatic play center.
At
www.kindergarten.com
there are terrific early emergent readers that can be used with a teddy
bear theme. They are very inexpensive to purchase. As an added bonus you
can download lots of great free stuff!!

Cinnamon
Bear Biscuits
Each
student should be provided with an unbaked canned biscuit and a small piece
of aluminum foil with their name written on it with a Sharpie marker.
The student will tear the biscuit dough into 6 pieces and form a bear's
head, body, arms, and legs. Sprinkle the bear with cinnamon and bake
according to the package directions.
Bear
Biscuits
10
- oz. tube refrigerated biscuits
raisins
maraschino
cherries
honey
Separate
biscuits. Cut three biscuits into 1/8's. Leave six whole.
For each bear biscuit, roll three of the small pieces into balls for the
two ears and the nose. Firmly press them onto the face. Press
in raisins for eyes and nose. Add 1/4 maraschino cherry to each ear.
Bake on a cookie sheet for 8 - 10 minutes at 400 degrees until golden brown.
Enjoy with honey, of course!
Mini
Teddy Bear Pancakes
Make
your favorite pancake batter. Pour a small amount of batter to form
a 2" pancake in the pan. Add two small drops of mixture to form ears.
Remove
cooked pancake to a plate and add features using chocolate chips, banana
slices, raisins, etc!
Toasty
Bears
Using
a bear shaped cookie cutter, cut a bear shape in a piece of toast.Top with
peanut butter or honey and raisins or other dried fruit for eyes.
Bear
Sandwiches
whole
wheat bread slices
peanut
butter
raisins
or chocolate chips
maraschino
cherries
Let
the children use a heart-shape cookie cutter to cut heart shapes out of
bread slices (partially frozen bread cuts easily or lightly toast the bread).
Show
them how to cut the points off their hearts to make the shapes resemble
bear faces. Then let them spread peanut butter over heart shape .
Add
raisins or chips to make eyes and mouth. Add cherries to make nose.
Mathematics
Have students bring their favorite teddy bear and graph them by size, color, or gender.
Use teddy bear counters in Math activities and for graphing. Students can graph them by color individually.
Provide them with a handful of bears and a graphing form with the appropriate color words already in place. The students graph the color bears that they received, then share their graphs with the class.
Have students estimate how many teddy bear counters, Teddy Grahams, or gummy bears are in a jar.
Sorting
Fun
Ask
the children to sort the teddy bears by categories(size, color, those wearing
bows, etc.) Then count the number in each category. Also, let the
children come up with ideas for categories. Talk about more and less.
Teddy
Graphing
Use
teddy bear counters in Math activities and for graphing. Students
can graph them by color individually. Provide them with a handful
of bears and a graphing form with the appropriate color words already in
place. The students graph the color bears that they received, then
share their graphs with the class.
Teddy
Estimation
Have
students estimate how many teddy bear counters, Teddy Grahams,or gummy
bears are in a jar.
Honey
Hives
Photocopy
beehives onto yellow construction paper and program them with a number.
Laminate. The students will count out the correct number of mini
bee erasers and place them on the hives.
Teddy
Patterns
Use
a bear die-cut and cut out different color bears. (If you laminate
the construction paper first, then cut them out with the die-cut, it will
save you lots of cutting!) The students will use the bear cutouts
to create patterns either in a pocket chart, on a table, or the floor.
They create AB patterns such as pink, purple, pink, purple, or ABC patterns
such as red, white, black or AAB patterns such as green, green, blue, etc.
Jamberry
Activities
Have
a jam tasting party with the four berry flavors listed in the book and
Ritz crackers. Have students draw their favorite berry and make a class
graph.
Art Activities
Bear
Cave
Use
a small cardboard box or a styrofoam meat tray as a base. The cave can
be made by stapling a brown crumpled paper bag in place. Children can add
bits of pine needles, twigs, moss, sawdust, straw and rocks. A teddy graham
bear can be tucked inside to hibernate!
Tea
Bears
Precut
teddy bear from poster board. Have parents save used tea bags. Let
children open the dried bags and shake the dried tea over the bear that
has been covered with glue. Use a tub to lay the bear in first
so the excess tea doesn't get all over. When they dry they
look like fuzzy bears. Staple on bows for a really cute bear!
Cinnamon
Bear
Mix
sugar and cinnamon. Have children cut out bear shape. Children can place
glue anywhere on the bear and add cinnamon and sugar mixture.
Smelly
Bears
Glue
sandpaper to tag board and then cut out bear shapes. Give the children
cinnamon sticks and let them rub thesticks on the sandpaper. The bears
will smell like cinnamon!
